What is it?
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a condition where there is a problem with how the brain and nervous system send and receive signals, rather than damage to the structure of the brain itself. This means the nervous system is not functioning properly, even though scans and tests may appear normal. FND is not purely a diagnosis of exclusion — there are specific, reproducible clinical signs that can help confirm the diagnosis.
FND can cause a wide range of symptoms, including weakness, tremors, difficulty walking, or problems with speech, vision, or sensation. These symptoms are real and can be just as disabling as those caused by other neurological conditions.
FND often develops after a period of stress, illness, injury, or trauma, but sometimes there is no clear trigger. It is best understood as a disruption in the brain’s control over movement and perception, rather than something imagined or intentionally produced. Here is a great resource to understand more about FND.

Our Treatment approach
Here at Reframe physio, we prioritize education as the first step—understanding that symptoms are real but arise from functional changes rather than structural damage helps reduce fear and build confidence in recovery.
Specialized physiotherapy plays a key role, emphasizing retraining of normal movement patterns through distraction, sensory feedback, and graded functional activities.
Effective treatment relies on collaboration between all parties involved, with the goal of restoring control, confidence, and normal function. We aim to work with you, your family and healthcare providers to achieve the best results possible.

How are we different?
I first came across Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) in one of the most unexpected places — the Emergency Department. I met people of all ages who had suddenly lost control of their body and were understandably frightened and confused. Using my clinical skills to help rule out serious conditions such as stroke, I worked with the wider medical team to reach a diagnosis and provide some clarity during a very stressful time.
What I’ve learned over the years is that understanding is powerful. When people know what’s happening and why, it can take away a lot of the fear and uncertainty that often come with FND. As physiotherapists, we’re lucky to have the time to really sit down with our clients — to listen, explain, and work together step by step. This has helped me develop the ability to discuss such a nuanced condition in a calm, compassionate, and easy-to-understand way.
While pain isn’t always the main symptom of FND, it’s not uncommon for people to experience it alongside other difficulties. My background in pain management means I can take a more holistic approach, helping you address both movement and pain so you can feel more in control again.
If you’re struggling with FND or similar symptoms and want to better understand what’s happening with your body, I’d love to work with you to create a plan that supports your recovery and helps you move forward with confidence.
What to expect for the session
We will begin by taking a detailed history of your symptoms and how they have evolved over time. As part of this process, we will also review other aspects of your health such as diet, sleep, and social or spiritual support. This will be followed by a comprehensive physical assessment that examines the function of your brain, body and autonomic nervous systems.
As there are several tests involved, we may need to divide the assessment into multiple sessions depending on your tolerance. We will work at a pace that suits you and adjust the process to ensure your comfort and safety throughout.
If any acute issues are identified, we will proceed with the appropriate treatment and provide recommendations to help initiate your rehabilitation. Follow-up reviews will then be scheduled to monitor your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your care plan.
Should we identify any concerning findings, we will promptly escalate your care to ensure you receive the appropriate attention as soon as possible. We aim to work collaboratively with your GP and specialists to support a coordinated and seamless recovery.
